Homemade Tortillas Recipe
I really enjoy making versatile, uncomplicated, fundamental foods from scratch, and tortillas are one of the best examples. With just a handful of ingredients—2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 3/4 cup of warm water, and 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil—you can produce fresh, preservative-free tortillas.
Tortillas are an excellent vehicle for almost any food, and they’re a lot of fun to eat. They’re also a lot of fun to make.
Tortillas have a pretty amazing flavor all by themselves, which is something most people don’t realize.
Ingredients
A flexible, go-to ingredient that brings carbs and shape to the equation.
Salt: Boosts taste and equalizes the tortillas.
Water at a warm temperature: Activates gluten in the flour for elasticity.
Moisture and tender texture come from the vegetable oil.
Ingredient Quantities
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions
1. In a big mixing bowl, blend the all-purpose flour and salt.
2. Mix the flour mixture with vegetable oil until a crumbly texture is obtained.
3. Slowly add the warm water to the flour mixture while stirring almost constantly. When the water and flour begin to combine, stop stirring and start mixing with your hands until a dough forms. If you have a stand mixer, use it, but keep the speed low.
4. Place the dough onto a surface that has been lightly dusted with flour and knead it for about 5 minutes, or until it is a smooth, elastic ball.
5. Cut the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each one into a ball.
6. Let the dough balls rest for at least 15 minutes under a clean kitchen towel.
7. Prepare a non-stick skillet by heating it to medium-high.
8. On a floured surface, each ball of dough is rolled out into a thin circle approximately 6 inches in diameter.
9. Put the rolled-out dough on the preheated skillet. Cook 1 to 2 minutes, until bubbles form on the surface.
10. Turn the tortilla over and cook 1 to 2 minutes longer, until golden spots appear. Use a towel to keep the cooked tortillas warm and soft while you finish the rest of the dough.

FAQ
- Can I use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour? The texture may differ slightly, and you might need a little more water, but you can use whole wheat flour instead.
- How do I store leftover tortillas? An airtight container is the best way to keep them for two days at room temperature. They will stay fresh for a week in the refrigerator but at the cost of producing an aromatic quality from the spices that will be diminished significantly compared with when they are kept at room temperature.
- Can I freeze homemade tortillas?Certainly! Put parchment paper between every tortilla and keep them in a freezer bag. They will be fine for three months.
- Why do my tortillas come out stiff?Cooking on too high a heat or for too long can result in rigidity. Use medium heat and ensure that they remain pliable while cooking.
- Is there an alternative to vegetable oil?Certainly! Olive oil, coconut oil, or even melted butter can be used as substitutes.
- Can I make these tortillas gluten-free?Substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend; however, the texture may be affected, and you may have to make some adjustments.
- What can I use to roll out the dough if I don’t have a rolling pin?A heavy cup or a clean glass bottle can serve as a substitute for a rolling pin.
Substitutions and Variations
Plain flour: For a different flavor, substitute with whole wheat flour; for a gluten-free option, use a flour blend.
Salt: You can use sea salt or kosher salt in the same quantity.
Use an equal amount of rice milk or almond milk for a slightly different taste.
Olive oil or melted coconut oil can be used as healthier alternatives to vegetable oil.
